Device for Accurate Field Area Measurement: GPS/GNSS Solutions for Agriculture
19.04.2026Accurate field area measurement is one of the key tasks in modern agriculture. Proper area determination affects crop planning, fertilizer application, land accounting, and overall farm efficiency.
Today, instead of rough estimates and manual calculations, farmers use modern GNSS technologies. They allow you to quickly, conveniently, and most importantly — accurately determine the area of any land plot.
In this article, we will look at two solutions from Geometer:
- GM SPIKE 2 — a compact GNSS receiver for area measurement
- geometer Y55G — a professional controller with RTK support
GM SPIKE 2 — a simple solution for accurate field area measurement
GM SPIKE 2 is a modern GNSS receiver (2026 model), designed for fast and convenient field area measurement.
- weight only 0.25 kg
- up to 30 hours of battery life
- easy connection to Android devices
- sufficient accuracy for agricultural tasks
The device can be used in two scenarios:
- driving around the field — using a magnetic mount on the vehicle roof
- walking measurement — using a telescopic pole TS180
How the measurement works
The measurement is performed using the Geometer SCOUT app:
- Launch the app on Android
- Select the area measurement mode
- Connect to the receiver
- Press “Start” and move along the field boundary
The app automatically creates the field contour and calculates the area. Points can be recorded every 1 meter or once per second. If obstacles are encountered, you can pause the recording, bypass them, and continue the measurement. Geometer SCOUT features a user-friendly interface, supports map layers, and allows exporting data in KML format for further use.
geometer Y55G — professional accuracy with RTK
geometer Y55G is an Android controller with a built-in GNSS RTK module that provides centimeter-level positioning accuracy.
- RTK support
- 1408 GNSS channels
- L1 / L2 / L5 frequencies
- GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS
The device also supports PPP mode (Galileo HAS, BeiDou), which allows achieving decimeter-level accuracy without a subscription. This mode is suitable for agricultural measurements but not for geodetic or cadastral work.
Measurement methods
With geometer Y55G, you can work in two ways:
- point-based method — capturing corner points (maximum accuracy)
- continuous recording — similar to GM SPIKE 2
To create a field, use the “Polygon” function, after which the system automatically calculates the area. The geometer Y55G controller already comes with the Geometer SCOUT app installed and can operate even without RTK.
Which device to choose
The choice depends on your needs:
- GM SPIKE 2 — ideal for fast measurements without complex setup
- geometer Y55G — for maximum accuracy and professional tasks
Both devices help save time, reduce errors, and work efficiently with digital maps.
Additional:
The kit includes the second-generation GNSS receiver GM SPIKE 2 and the geometer SCOUT agricultural application for area measurement. This is an optimal solution for accurate measurement of field areas, distances, and point positioning. The external GNSS receiver with antenna ensures improved accuracy, high sensitivity, and stable GPS/GNSS signal reception even in challenging conditions.
A complete equipment set for accurate measurement of agricultural fields. The GNSS GM SPIKE 2 kit opens up new opportunities for agronomists in field area measurement. The kit includes a rugged Android device that allows agronomists, managers, and accountants to work faster, more accurately, and more efficiently without unnecessary complexity.
The Y55G field controller is a modern geodetic controller with an integrated GNSS RTK receiver. It features a multi-frequency 1408-channel board supporting L1, L2, and L5 bands. The device supports all major satellite systems: GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and IRNSS, ensuring stable positioning even in challenging environments.
